I actually wanted to blur this, but you know what. I won’t.
I want to show more of myself, right? But it’s not about what I voted for. Because this guy is simply an old classmate and that’s why I voted for him.
But what is it about?
I’m 39 and I voted for the first time 📩
Is the glass half full or half empty?
Because in my entire life, I had never voted before.
“Why not?” people always ask.
Very simple: statistically, one vote has almost no impact on the outcome.
Still, I always hear the same arguments:
• It’s about the principle
• It’s your right
• You should do it
• You owe it to democracy
• What if everyone thinks like that?
And although I always say I don’t want politics on LinkedIn, I can’t ignore it this time: I never really agreed with those arguments.
Not because they’re untrue.
But purely rationally, voting feels a bit like participating in a lottery.
So I asked ChatGPT:
What is the chance that one vote actually makes a difference in the Netherlands?
The answer (simplified):
In national elections, the chance that one vote is decisive is roughly between 1 in 10 million and 1 in 100 million.
In local elections, it can be slightly higher, but still extremely small, often 1 in hundreds of thousands to a few million.
In short: rationally, one vote almost never changes the outcome.
But… here comes the twist.
On the eve of the last election, a good friend said to me:
“If voting doesn’t matter, then it also doesn’t matter if you do it once.”
That got me.
Suddenly, that felt like an interesting thought.
Is the glass half empty? Or half full? Let’s look at it positively.
Maybe it’s just an experience.
And that’s what it was for me.
So I went to vote.
And honestly?
I loved it.
Not because I suddenly believe my vote changes the world.
But because it feels special to be part of something millions of people do at the same time.
And I think that’s what it’s about: connection.
Am I now convinced to vote every single election with full passion?
We’ll see.
But one thing is certain:
I voted.
And that’s what entrepreneurship is about: evolving, growing and staying positive.
Good luck voting today!
