My first Harvard Certificate!

What Patagonia and Cor van Zadelhof taught me about impactful entrepreneurship and growing older

26 March 2025 -

“Your age does not determine your energy and vitality.”

Yes, my first Harvard Certificate! It hangs on the wall right away. 🏅 What started as a business case about Patagonia, ended up as a day full of inspiration – both business and personal.

Led by Fred van Eenennaam, we delved into the deeper layers of Patagonia’s unique strategy. Not only does the brand excel in quality, but they also dared to think radically differently: the company was transferred to a trust and a nonprofit, putting the famous motto “Earth is now our only Shareholder” into practice.

What fascinated me was the question: is this construction really in line with the mission of founder Yvon Chouinard? And what does this mean for the role of CEO Ryan Gellert? His leadership is now being tested on more than just profits – he has to balance financial performance with serving the planet.

During the day I spoke with Cor van Zadelhof. 87 years old. Full of energy. Working every day. He radiates, lives consciously, works with passion and has an inspiring life rhythm. Cor reminded me of my grandparents – people who, despite their age, remain in the middle of life.

What do I take with me? That leadership is about daring to make choices. Just like Patagonia, as an entrepreneur you have to think about your legacy. Not only financially, but also socially. And personally? Vitality is a choice. I also want to be jumping around at 87, with a glass of wine in my hand and a mission in my heart.

The lesson of the day is that impact, whether it is about companies or people, is created when vision, courage and continuity come together. Patagonia proves that sustainability is not only good for the world, but can also be a smart strategy.

Show me the magic in real life 🪄
