The power of small rituals

On coffee, humanity, and why small moments can carry big meaning

06 January 2026 -

"Daily rituals aren't just habits they're moments of connection."

🇧🇬 This week, I heard something that suddenly gave my entire morning ritual a different meaning.

The kind man from Bulgaria I see every day at the Zuid train station told me he’s going back to his home country at the end of the month.
His wife is sick, and she’ll get better care there.

It was an unexpected, vulnerable moment right in the middle of the morning rush.

For months now, my day has started with him. I stop for a moment, grab a cappuccino or tea (or if I’m running late and someone beat me to it: a chocolate croissant or a banana), and listen to what he’s in the mood for that morning.

It’s a small ritual, but it always gives me energy.
And I’m not the only one. There are others who bring him something, who chat with him, who see him.

And that’s what really struck me:
A simple routine between two strangers can grow into something meaningful.

Daily rituals aren’t just habits.
They’re moments of humanity, of connection, of giving without expectation.

In a world that seems to move faster every day, it’s exactly this kind of interaction that reminds me we’re part of something bigger.
A cup of coffee, a short conversation, a smile it’s small, but the feeling is big.
For him. For me. For everyone who takes a moment to pause.

His story today reminded me that we all carry our own struggles and loves with us often unseen.
And that’s exactly why these small, warm gestures matter.

Show me the magic in real life 🪄
