The power of rolo and being offline

A rolo ad as a reminder: why being offline is just as important as online visibility.

03 September 2025 -

"Think carefully about what you do with your last rolo."

Just a golden oldie on this national offline day: rolo and dumbo!

who remembers this ad? “think carefully about what you do with your last rolo.” that elephant, that little boy, and that iconic revenge… brilliant in its simplicity.

what made this ad so good? simple: it was relatable, funny, and a little bit cheeky, and it stuck with you. it brings up a lot of nostalgia for many of us. a time when commercials were watched by everyone (and quoted!) and when you literally had to wait for a show to start. no algorithms. no skip-ad. no tiktok short-form snippets. just: watch and wait.

so, this national offline day is a great time to reflect on how it used to be. back when we barely had internet, let alone a smartphone. when you were truly unreachable on vacation and your camera still clicked.

and maybe that’s the point of today. because going offline every now and then is quite healthy. for your focus. for your relationships. for your creativity.

social media is fantastic. your network grows. your visibility increases. you learn. but there’s also a downside: constant stimulation, screen addiction, comparing yourself to others, and the idea that you always have to be ‘on’.

today is a good day to be aware of that. to recharge, without a charger. and maybe… watch that one ad again on youtube (but then really go offline, okay?).

and what about linkedin marketing? believe it or not, the power of sometimes doing nothing works here too. because visibility isn’t just about posting, it’s also about listening, responding, and pausing. you don’t build a strong network online alone.
