No tough-guy story. Just genuinely got injured while sword fighting and won! As an AI fanatic, I always want to stay up-to-date. So, I wanted to properly test Virtual Reality (VR). But apparently, that’s not without risk…
I spoke to several VR and AR experts, and it quickly became clear: it had to be the Meta Quest 3. So, I did it.
And honestly: it’s truly impressive what’s possible. You literally see your entire computer in front of you, floating in the air. You can type with your fingers in the air, as if you’re touching an invisible keyboard. And you can see your entire surroundings: your living room is displayed one-on-one, fully digitally. Nothing is real, but everything seems eerily so. You can even grab a glass of water and drink from it while in VR. It’s truly bizarre what’s possible these days.
But just like with all forms of working with AI, this is apparently not without risk. I was so into it, completely in my element, that during a sword fight, I suddenly hit my hand hard against a sharp edge of a cabinet. The result: a gigantic gash on my hand.
I immediately thought of those old Nintendo Wii videos where people accidentally throw the controller into the TV. This, however, is a few levels more dangerous; you have no idea what you’re doing in the real world. Before you know it, you’re walking through a window or tripping over something sharp.
It’s a valuable lesson: with AI and all other forms of innovation, everything seems possible, but the risks are also there and they are often significant.
So, know what you’re doing. Do it step by step. And never blindly trust technology. Trust yourself.
