16 Years of LinkedIn: Key Lessons

Inspiration from 16 years of LinkedIn and timeless lessons for success.

14 January 2025 -

“The biggest mistake you can make is thinking you're already there.”

Today I celebrate my Sweet 16 on LinkedIn! It feels like we grew up together, with the same mission: connecting, learning, and growing. But how do you stay ahead in a world that never stands still? That question is at the heart of my journey and these lessons. Let’s dive in.

Keep a close eye on your competition

Think of a game of chess: you don’t win by just planning your next move, but by constantly monitoring your opponent’s moves. It’s the same with your competition. When I created my LinkedIn profile in 2008 as an Economics student in Rotterdam, I had no idea how important the platform would become. In fact, the Netherlands is now one of the most active LinkedIn markets in the world, with 1.2 million daily users. That success doesn’t come easily – it’s a constant exercise in strategic thinking and anticipation.

Don’t just compare yourself to your direct competitors, look at other industries. How do they keep innovating? My first presentation at LinkedIn’s Amsterdam office emphasized the importance of relationships. That focus is timeless, but the way we do it is constantly changing. Ask yourself: What can I learn from others to improve my strategy?

Embrace change and new ideas

“This is how we’ve always done it” is perhaps the most dangerous phrase in any organization. The world is moving faster than ever, and the key to success is flexibility. Young talent, startups, and technology trends offer fresh perspectives that you can’t ignore.

Think about how LinkedIn started: a modest platform launched in 2003 by Reid Hoffman and his team. Today, it’s an indispensable tool for professionals worldwide. This growth didn’t come from stagnation, but from continuous innovation – from recommendations and groups to tools for recruiters and marketers.

Personally, I’ve learned that embracing change can be your greatest advantage. For example, start with a small A/B test to experiment with new ideas. Who knows, your next big breakthrough might be among them.

See success as a process, not a goal

Celebrating milestones, like my 16-year LinkedIn journey, feels great. But the truth is: success is never ‘done’. It’s a process of continuous learning and adapting. Just as I look forward to my 18th anniversary (or even my 21st), you should always keep a long-term mindset.

Keep investing in your network, customer relationships, and innovation. Build a funnel that’s not just about short-term sales, but also about sustainable growth. One of my favorite LinkedIn memories is how I kept challenging myself to build relationships. From inspiring talks to giving presentations – every moment contributed to where I am today.

How LinkedIn can help you stay relevant

If you’re not already doing so, actively use LinkedIn to put these three lessons into practice:

  • Network: Grow your connections and stay visible in your industry.
  • Learn: Follow companies, leaders, and trends to stay ahead of the curve.
  • Share: Build thought leadership by sharing valuable insights.

It’s no coincidence that the Netherlands has one of the highest LinkedIn engagement rates in the world. It is the platform to stay relevant in a world that never stands still.

How do you stay ahead?

The biggest mistake you can make is thinking that you are already there. What you do today determines whether you will still be there tomorrow. Invest in your network, keep learning, and embrace change.
